What is the Herd Management service?

Updated

The Herd Management service monitors feeding group by group, not animal by animal. It alerts you when an entire batch drops off, which is generally due to the ration or herd management rather than to a particular animal.

This article contains the following sections:

  • The three group alerts
  • Monitoring alerts
  • Feeding for each group
  • Target values

The three group alerts:

Alert Trigger Common causes
Drop in chewing The group eats and ruminates significantly less than on previous days Most often a sudden change, such as a poorly tolerated feed transition. Also: insufficient water intake (dirty or faulty drinker) or a health problem such as flu. React quickly to avoid a lasting impact.
Low rumination The group's rumination time falls below the value you have set Often a lack of fibre in the ration, or insufficient intake
Low feed intake Time spent eating falls below the value you have set Often a lack of availability or structure in the ration

The sensitivity of these three alerts is set by category, in the group feeding calculation settings.

Monitoring alerts:

On the dashboard, in Animals to watch, the Group nutrition box shows alerts from the last 72 hours.

Feeding for each group:

For each group, the dashboard shows the average rumination and feed intake times over the last 24 hours. Click a group to open its curves.

7-day values are no longer calculated
Since version 25.11, the app displays a dash in their place. To observe a trend, use the group curve and its zoom.

Target values:

Indicator Target value
Rumination, total mixed ration indoors At least 9 h
Rumination, mixed system About 8 h 30
Rumination at pasture About 7 h 30
Feed intake indoors Between 6 and 8 h
Number of meals At least 8 meals of 50 minutes
Shape of the curves Stable over time, with no sudden drop

How to interpret a deviation
Rumination that is too low often results from insufficient intake or fibre: a mix that is too fine or, conversely, sorting at the feed trough. Very low feed intake also reflects insufficient quantity. Abnormally long feed intake is more likely to indicate sorting at the feed trough or overgrazing.
