What is the Feeding service?
Sur cette page
The Feeding service continuously measures the time each animal spends eating and ruminating. It alerts you to animals that drop off, so that you can intervene before the problem sets in.
This article contains the following sections:
- Prerequisites
- Collar measurements
- The three alerts
- Monitoring alerts
Prerequisites:
The collar must be fitted and assigned to an animal.
Allow 3 days before the first alerts
The collar needs this time to learn the animal's habits and know what is normal for it.
Collar measurements:
The collar continuously tracks two times: the time spent eating and the time spent ruminating. The app displays the total for the last 24 hours, recalculated every hour for each animal.
Detection adjusts itself to the condition of each animal: a fresh cow and an animal in mid-lactation are not assessed against the same benchmarks.
The three alerts:
| Alert | Trigger |
|---|---|
| Drop in chewing | The animal eats and ruminates significantly less than on previous days. |
| Low feed intake | The time spent eating over 24 hours falls below a value you have set. |
| Low rumination | The time spent ruminating over 24 hours falls below a value you have set. |
These three alerts are set by animal category, in Settings then Calculations. The trigger values are presented in the article Feeding service alert thresholds.
A separate setting for fresh cows
These are the animals most at risk of developing a health problem. A specific setting for early lactation lets you be alerted sooner for them.
Monitoring alerts:
On the dashboard, in Animals to watch, the Animal feeding box shows the number of alerts from the last 72 hours.
Click the box to display the details. Animals are listed from the most recent alert to the oldest; if an animal has several alerts, they are grouped together after the most recent one.
This page has two purposes: to act quickly on animals that have just dropped off, then to check that they are recovering.
