What is the Calving service?

Updated

The Calving service infers a probability of calving from the animal's movements, the time it spends standing and lying down, and its feeding habits. Its main purpose is to alert you to calvings that are dragging on, so that you can intervene at the right time.

This article contains the following sections:

  • Prerequisites
  • What can distort detection
  • The calving curve
  • The two alerts
  • Monitoring on the dashboard
  • Deactivation after calving

Prerequisites:

For the service to work:

  • the collar must be fitted and assigned to an animal;
  • calving mode must be active, which means that heat mode must be deactivated for this animal.

Allow 24 hours before the first alerts
The collar needs this time to establish its benchmarks for the animal.

What can distort detection:

The animal must remain in its usual environment as calving approaches.

Do not separate the animal from its group
Separating it from its group or restraining it may delay the alert, or even prevent it.

Unlike the Heat service, the group is not taken into account in the calculation: only the animal's own data counts.

The calving curve:

The curve is available in each animal's record. It expresses the probability of calving from 0 to 100: 0 means very unlikely, 100 very likely.

The two alerts:

Alert Meaning
High calving probability The probability has just exceeded the threshold: calving has probably started. You may receive this alert several times, at most once every 3 hours.
Probability still high The probability has remained high for some time: the calving is taking a long time. This is the alert that signals a long calving.

Monitoring on the dashboard:

The Calving module of the dashboard shows three lists.

List Content
To be fitted Animals without a collar that should have one. The insemination date is used to calculate the due date and to identify animals approaching it without monitoring.
Active Animals under calving monitoring, for which you can receive alerts.
Manual activation Animals with a collar for which you can activate monitoring.

Deactivation after calving:

Calving mode must be deactivated once the calf is born. There are three methods, from the fastest to the slowest:

  1. Confirm the calving notification. This is immediate and is the recommended method.
  2. Deactivate the service manually in the app.
  3. Record the calving in your herd management software. In this case, deactivation is not immediate.

Record the calving within 10 days
After this period, you will start receiving heat alerts for a pregnant animal.
