Understanding the Health service

Updated

The Health service measures how much time your cows spend lying down and standing, and on which activities. It is used to identify a lack of comfort in the building or in herd management. It does not send any alerts: you consult the data whenever you wish.

This article contains the following sections:

  • Displaying a group's data
  • The four activities measured
  • Target values
  • Reading the comfort graph
  • Monitoring changes over two months

Displaying a group's data:

The dashboard shows the lying time and standing time of each group.

To display the details of a group:

  1. Open the dashboard.
  2. Click the group.

The four activities measured:

The collar classifies each moment of the day as an activity, distinguishing between standing and lying positions.

Activity What is counted
Feed intake Time spent eating.
Rumination Time spent ruminating.
Inactivity Standing doing nothing, or lying in deep sleep.
Other activity Moving around and drinking.

Target values:

Indicator Target value What a deviation indicates
Lying time At least 12 h, spread between day and night. —
Imposed standing time As short as possible (milking, restraint in headlocks), ideally accompanied by activity. —
Standing doing nothing As little as possible, especially at night. Generally, a lack of comfort in the bedding area.
Other activity Less than 15%. Difficult movement, or complicated access to water or pasture.
Lying periods On average 10 periods of 1 h 15. —
Changes in group activity over 24 hours

Reading the comfort graph:

The graph combines lying time and chewing time. Each point represents an animal: the selected animal appears in blue, the group average in orange. The meaning of each zone is explained in the app's help.

Start with the animals at the bottom left: they chew little and lie down little. Then check whether they are sick animals, fresh cows or first-calvers, so that you can act on the real cause.

Monitoring changes over two months:

The comfort curve shows, day by day over the last 2 months, standing time, lying time, the number of lying periods and their average duration. Zoom in to display more detailed data, updated more often.
