Using the app day to day

Understanding animal groups and subgroups

Updated

Your animals are automatically divided into six categories. These groups are also used for heat detection: the app compares each animal with the other animals in its group. A poorly formed group therefore directly impairs detection.

This article contains the following sections:

  • The six categories
  • Changes of category
  • Forming your groups correctly
  • Creating a subgroup

The six categories:

Animals are divided automatically, based on the information sent by your tools or entered by you:

  • dairy cows;
  • dry cows;
  • suckler cows;
  • dairy heifers;
  • suckler heifers;
  • males.

Changes of category:

Change What triggers it
Heifer to cow Receipt of a calving event, or exceeding the age at calving defined in your farm settings
Cow to dry cow Receipt of a drying-off event, or exceeding the drying-off period defined in your farm settings

Forming your groups correctly:

For reliable detection, each group must:

  • reflect a real batch, i.e. animals that physically live together;
  • contain between 5 and 110 animals.

Outside these rules, detection becomes less reliable
The group effect is poorly estimated and heat detection becomes less reliable.

Creating a subgroup:

Subgroups are optional: create them if your herd management requires it.

To create a subgroup:

  1. Open Groups.
  2. Select the category in which to create the subgroup.
  3. Tap +.
  4. Give the subgroup a name, then confirm.
Creating a subgroup

The subgroup is created, but it is still empty.

To add animals to a subgroup:

  1. Open the subgroup folder.
  2. Select the animals one by one.
  3. Confirm.

Three limits to be aware of
A subgroup can only contain animals from the same category. It must contain at least one animal to exist. An empty subgroup does not appear in the Groups tab.
