Fitting the Vigivel sensor on the animal and assigning it

Updated

The way the sensor is fitted directly determines the reliability of detection. The sensor is switched on before fitting, placed under the tail with the indicator light facing upwards, and starts plotting its curve immediately, with no waiting time.

Switch on the sensor first
A sensor that is fitted but switched off transmits nothing: the light must be green before fitting.

This article contains the following sections:

  • Fitting the sensor
  • The importance of the position
  • Fitting duration
  • Assigning the sensor to the animal

Fitting the sensor:

To fit the sensor:

  1. Place the sensor under the tail, level with the vulva, with the indicator light facing upwards. A label with an arrow shows the direction.
  2. Secure it: wrap the adhesive tape once around the tail before placing the sensor, then wrap once above and once below to hold it in place.
  3. Check the tightness: the tape must be loose enough not to restrict blood circulation, and tight enough to stop the sensor from moving.

The importance of the position:

The sensor must remain level with the tail. If it slips to the side, movements and temperature are measured poorly and the prediction deteriorates significantly. Imprecise fitting is one of the main causes of poorly detected calvings.

The sensor is about 6 cm long, compared with 3 to 4 cm for one turn of tape. Apply at least one complete layer, so that the sensor stays in direct contact with the tail and does not rest only on the tape.

Fitting duration:

Benchmark Duration
Ideal duration 4 to 5 days
Maximum 10 days
Beyond 5 days Redo the bandage: it holds less reliably.

Do not fit too early
A sensor left on too long can saturate the skin of the tail and cause swelling. Fit it as the due date approaches rather than several weeks before.

Assigning the sensor to the animal:

To assign the sensor to an animal:

  1. Tap the sensor concerned.
  2. Tap the cow's head icon.
  3. Search for the animal, or tap + to create a new one.
  4. Enter its number or name.
  5. Tap Confirm.

Then check the animal's alert level: 75 is suitable for most animals, 65 is recommended for heifers.
