Installing the anchors (with the Location service)
Sur cette page
Anchors are relays attached in the building: they transmit messages from the ear tag sensors to the Ear Tag Base and are used to locate the animals. Their position determines good data reception and the accuracy of animal location.

Who carries out the installation?
The anchors are usually installed by your distributor. Depending on how your distributor works, or if you bought the equipment directly, you may need to install them yourself.
Placing the anchors:
The anchors form a chain: each anchor relays messages to the next anchor, then to the Ear Tag Base. Follow the rules below, which are also shown in the app when you create the building plan.
| Rule | Recommended value | Explanation |
|---|---|---|
| Anchors close to the base | At least 2 anchors within 25 m of the Ear Tag Base | These anchors provide the link between the mesh network and the base. |
| Distance between two anchors | 25 m recommended, 50 m maximum | An anchor's range is about 50 m in open field. |
| Distance on the same line | 10 m between two anchors | The app measures distances relative to the outline of the building and to the 3 nearest anchors. |
| Layout | In lines and staggered | Offset the anchors from one line to the next. |
| Corners of the building | One anchor in each of the four corners | The corners are part of the area to cover. |
| Visibility | Anchors within sight of each other | The range of about 50 m applies in open field. |
| Installation without the location service | 1 Ear Tag Base and at least 3 anchors | Minimum to plan for an installation without animal location. |
- 1 Ear Tag Base, inside the building but outside the location area, within 25 m of at least 2 anchors
- 2 Anchor placed in a corner of the location area
- 3 Distance between two anchors: 25 m recommended, 50 m maximum
- 4 Boundary of the animal location area
- 5 Building wall
Examples of layout errors to avoid:
- 1 Only one anchor within 25 m of the Ear Tag Base
- 2 More than 50 m between two anchors
- 3 Corner without an anchor
- 4 Anchors facing each other instead of staggered
An anchor at the end of the chain depends on all the anchors before it: moving one anchor can put another anchor too far away.
These rules are deliberately simple and do not cover every building configuration. After installation, run a network audit from Settings > Network audit to check the anchor layout.
Estimating the number of anchors needed:
As a guide, allow about 1 anchor per 100 m² of building.
| Building area | Estimated number of anchors |
|---|---|
| 500 m² | About 5 anchors |
| 1,000 m² | About 10 anchors |
| 2,000 m² | About 20 anchors |
| 3,000 m² | About 30 anchors |
| 5,000 m² | About 50 anchors |
These numbers are only an estimate: the exact number depends on the shape of the building and the anchor placement rules.
Attaching the anchors:
- Attach each anchor vertically, preferably in the direction shown by the arrow at the top right of its front face.
- Attach each anchor between 2 m and 2.50 m high, out of reach of the animals.
- In most cases, attach the anchor to a wooden post or to a vertical steel I-beam.
- Screw the anchor in place by its side mounting tabs, using the self-drilling screws supplied : they are suitable for all types of building, including wooden posts.
- An anchor's battery has an estimated life of about 10 years.
An anchor lying flat is deliberately inactive, to save its battery during storage and delivery. Never attach an anchor flat.
- 1 Anchor
- 2 Arrow showing the mounting direction
- 3 Self-drilling screw, in the mounting tab
- 4 Mounting height, between 2 m and 2.50 m
- 5 Wooden post
- 6 Steel I-beam, in vertical position
Saving the position of the anchors:
After fitting, save the position of each anchor in the app:
- on a computer, from Settings > Layout, by placing the anchor on the building plan;
- on a phone, with the Geolocateaction, standing next to the anchor: the phone's current position is saved.
Each anchor is identified by its serial number. It is shown on a label with a barcode, underneath the anchor.
- 1 Serial number label
Checking that the anchors are working:
- An anchor that is not communicating may be lying flat: first check that it is attached vertically.
- The date of each anchor's last communication is displayed on the devices screen of the app.
