Fitting an ear tag on an animal

The ear tag sensor is attached to the animal's ear with an applicator, like an identification tag. It can be reused from one animal to another.

Where should the sensor be placed?

Three reference points determine the position of the sensor: the chosen ear, the position relative to the official identification tag and the distance from the head.

Reference point Instruction
Ear Choose the ear on the side of the fixed bar of the headlock: if the fixed bar is on the animal's right, fit the sensor on the right ear.
Official identification tag The official tag is always fitted before the sensor, usually towards the outer middle of the ear. Place the sensor further towards the inside of the ear, on the head side.
Ribs Place the sensor between the two ribs of the ear (the cartilage), never on a rib.
Distance from the head Ideally from 3/8 to 1/2 of the length of the ear. From 1/2 to 5/8, the position is still acceptable. A bovine's ear is generally 15 to 20 cm long.

  • 2  Sensor fitted on the ear on the side of the fixed bar
Position of the sensor on the ear
  • 1  Recommended area, between the two ribs, from 3/8 to 1/2 of the length of the ear starting from the head
  • 2  Acceptable area, from 1/2 to 5/8
  • 3  Length of the ear
Position du capteur par rapport à la boucle officielle : 1. Boucle d'identification officielle, posée en premier ; 2. Capteur, posé plus à l'intérieur de l'oreille
Position of the sensor relative to the official tag
  • 1  Official identification tag, fitted first
  • 2  Sensor, fitted further inside the ear

Do not fit the sensor too close to the head, too close to the tip of the ear or on a rib.

Preparing the applicator:

The sensor is delivered switched on: no activation is needed. Its number is written on the back.

Equipment needed:

  • an applicator: a universal applicator is suitable;
  • a disinfectant solution, preferably chlorhexidine;
  • a bucket to soak the studs.

To prepare the applicator:

  1. Soak the studs in the bucket filled with disinfectant solution.
  2. Place the sensor (female part) on one jaw of the applicator.
  3. Place a stud (male part) on the other jaw.

Fitting the sensor:

To fit the sensor:

  1. Lock the animal in the headlock.
  2. Place the applicator on the ear, at the identified position.
  3. Close the applicator to attach the sensor.
  4. Associate the sensor with the animal in the Mozaë app.

Heat data is displayed as soon as the sensor is associated with the animal, according to the usual rules of the Heat service.

To reuse a sensor, remove it with a tag cutter (not supplied), then dissociate it from the animal before associating it with another animal.
